Where does the knowledge of knots come from?

Nodes are often knowledge of experience. However, new knots are still being developed to connect modern ropes and strings reliably.
In the centuries when large sailors were the most important means of transport in the trade between the continents, the sailors needed many different special knots to use the sails optimally with the rope. On the ships, the sailors had to travel with hundreds of meters of rope, on the high seas, in wind and weather, to handle the rope of natural fiber safely. A great challenge for the sailors, which was only to be mastered by a secure knowledge of the nodes standardized for the respective purpose.
The Christian seafaring is an important source, countless other professions also look back on a long tradition of knot tying.
